Andy Murray aims for singles return in 2019

"I hope at some stage this year I would be able to get back to playing singles again", said Murray, whose last competitive match was a five-set loss to Roberto Bautista Agut at January's Australian Open.

Murray is due to enter the doubles court next week at the Fever-Tree Championships at Queen's Club, alongside Spain's Feliciano Lopez.

The three-time grand slam victor will make his comeback next week after entering the doubles with Feliciano Lopez.at the Fever-Tree Championships next week, just under five months after undergoing hip resurfacing surgery.

"I don't think when Wimbledon finishes that I will just step onto the singles court the following week and everything's good", he said.

"I'm feeling good, pretty much pain free and enjoying just training, practising, improving all the time just now".

But while Murray is targeting a return to the singles court, he admitted this is unlikely to be possible until after the US Open.

Murray also is the men's singles 2012 and 2016 Olympic gold medallist, making him the only tennis player, male or female, to have won two Olympic singles titles. In the words of Bob Bryan, the 41-year-old doubles champion who underwent the same hip operation last year, a best-of-five-set singles match is "almost close to 50 times more physical" than doubles. "I think it's going to take a bit longer", he added.

"[Against Tiafoe], I did a lot of the usual drills I would do if I am going to play singles but I didn't play a set with him". I have done some singles training drills with my coach.

A few weeks ago the Murray brothers discussed playing together at the tournament, but with Andy's recovery still in its early stages it was decided that doubles specialist Jamie should find a more reliable partner. "I did first four shots in the rally, couple more, but no extended rallies".

"We spoke about it and I told him that it was not certain that I will be ready to play and I also don't particularly want to let him down two minutes before the tournament. I wouldn't be surprised if that was how the draw came out". I was moving them rather than them moving me about.

Murray has linked up with Amazon Prime Video to create a biennial award which will support young British tennis talent.
