The goalkeeper was only recruited six months ago but Villa are looking to "cut their losses" as they prepare for life in the Premier League.

The game has also been chosen for live television footage. They were last in the Premier League in 2015/16 when we won 3-1 at home and 2-0 at Villa Park.

They were relegated from the top flight in 2016 after finishing rock-bottom with 17 points, but boyhood Villa fan Smith has proved the flawless fit and the ex-Brentford boss led them back into the Premier League in his first season at the helm.

The release of the new fixtures adds to the excitement for fans of the football club who can now start planning their trips away.

Villa's first-ever visit to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has been pencilled in for Saturday 10 August at 3pm, although this could yet change if the game is among the opening batch of televised games.

The Boxing Day fixture throws up a home game against Norwich and the curtain will come down on the 2018/19 campaign with a trip to West Ham United. Villa have never played at Spurs' new ground and the supporters will probably travel down in large numbers.

Whoever gets the England stopper will have to break the bank to get him, as Stoke are expected to hold out for more than £20 million for what is a key player for them, and very much one of their prized assets.
