On Friday afternoon, an official club announcement confirmed NUFC participation for the coming season.

Additionally, no more than two of the players over 21 can have made more than 40 first-team appearances, also as of June 30.

Manchester United are set to participate in next season's EFL Trophy for the first time in their history.

The clubs have previously refrained from taking part in the competition, but their under-21 sides will next season become the latest Category One Academy teams to take part.

The pair join youth teams from Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Arsenal in next year's competition - meaning the Premier League's top six teams last campaign will be represented.

They saw off Macclesfield Town on penalties at St. James' Park in the second round, before suffering a 4-0 defeat at League One outfit Sunderland in the round of 16.

The round one group stage draw will take place in July, with the first round of fixtures scheduled to take place in the week commencing Monday, September 2.

The club's Under-21s were knocked out of the competition, then named the Checkatrade Trophy, by eventual finalists Sunderland at the Round of 16 stage last season.
