UK: MPs defeat motion to block no-deal Brexit

The efforts to avoid a no-deal Brexit come from comments made by Conservative Party candidates hoping to succeed Theresa May as prime minister that they will not delay Brexit beyond the now scheduled date of October 31.

Almost three years after the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union, and after three failed attempts to push a deal through Parliament, there is still deadlock and uncertainty about how to deliver BREXIT.

Mr Johnson officially launches his attempt to replace Theresa May with an appeal today for a mandate to face down Brussels before the October 31 deadline.

He said: "No-deal Brexit on 31 October is back to being a racing certainty". He says in a speech to be...

Tory Brexiteer Andrew Bridgen said: "The Conservative Parliamentary Party is such a broad church that some of my colleagues appear to be no longer in the church".

But it wasn't enough to make up for the eight Labour MPs who opposed the motion and the few who actively abstained (most of those with "no vote recorded" were authorised absences).

"It has to be respected by whoever is the next British prime minister", he continued.

"This is a disappointing, narrow defeat".

Mr Johnson, seen as the clear front runner in the contest, said it was essential that Britain was out of the European Union by the end of October.

Tory leadership frontrunner Boris Johnson said that he was "not aiming for a no deal" but that MPs would "reap the whirlwind" if they tried to thwart Britain's withdrawal from the EU.

He insisted he was not aiming for no-deal, but said the Government had to show it was serious about leaving if it was to stand any chance of securing concessions from the EU.

Edwin Morgan, the IoD's interim director general, said: "This week's vote won't be the last twist in the Brexit saga but it made clear how real the possibility of no deal is".

"I don't think it's sensible for candidates to box themselves into a corner on this", he said.

"This is a time for a skilled negotiation not empty threats", Foreign Secretary Hunt said.

"With every week and month that goes by in which we fail to deliver on our promise", he continued, "I am afraid we will further alienate not just our natural supporters but anyone who believes that politicians should deliver on their promises".
