The split from the charity reflects "divergent paths" they are on, aides say. The Cambridges are taking on more formal and restrictive roles as future king and queen while the Sussexes have more flexibility.

It said both couples will continue to work together in the future, including on the Heads Together mental health campaign.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are officially splitting from their joint charity with Prince William and Kate Middleton amid claims of a growing rift between the royal couples, global reports stated.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will continue to work to stay on at The Foundation, but the Sussexes are leaving to set up their own charitable endeavour.

The palace release went on to say that new changes to the royal charity structure are created to "best complement the work and responsibilities of Their Royal Highnesses as they prepare for their future roles, and to better align their charitable activity with their new households".

The Sussex Royal Instagram account has 8.7 million followers while the Kensington Palace account now sits at 9.3 million, not much difference at all.

The decision was confirmed in a trustee meeting yesterday, attended by Prince William and Prince Harry. When William and Kate sent thank you notes to fans who had celebrated Prince Louis' first birthday in April, their letter was addressed from "The Office of TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge".

"Later this year The Royal Foundation will become the principal charitable and philanthropic vehicle for The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge".

In March, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the two royal couples would split their households.

"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will establish their own new charitable foundation with transitional operating support from The Royal Foundation".

"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex" is on display at the Palace of Holyrood House in Scotland, running until October 6.
