Although this is not the Indian government's first attempt to police messages on WhatsApp, the administration still doesn't seem to understand the very idea of the app - end-to-end encryption.

The new government request comes as part of proposed changes to the IT Act to ensure traceability of all content shared on WhatApp - and online platforms in general - raising surveillance concerns and questions about online censorship.

Currently, WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted and the messages can only be read by the sender and the receiver and aren't stored and cannot be read by Whatsapp itself.

"Fingerprinting WhatsApp messages will help find the originator of the message". It is believed to be technically possible by WhatsApp if it tends to make that a possibility, the official stated according to the report. Encrypted messaging is WhatsApp's key feature, but it makes content moderation hard, since neither governments nor the platform itself can access messages between users.

The officials believe some messages seldom are required to be traceable since the anonymity on the internet apparently has reached its limit further leading to uncontrollable situations similar to the lynchings that happened previous year.

WhatsApp, the Facebook-owned messaging service, collaborated with Indian government's investment promotion agency, Invest India, to invite startups from all over the country for a contest involving prize money of $250,000.

It is important to note here that while the government might be looking at WhatsApp as a vulnerable platform for information sharing, it can not be ignored that it is also the most trusted and popular messaging medium for Indians.

Henceforth, enabling tracing on messages have the risk of being misused and it also breaches the privacy of the users. If you need any proof of the premium user experience that WhatsApp offers, then you should know that the chatting app is used by nearly one billion people every single month. Also, once the regulation comes into effect, there will be many other interested parties who can demand similar right.
