Cook further paid tribute to Ive in an interview with the FT, highlighting his role in rescuing the company from its early 90s doldrums: "The work on the original iMac was sort of the point at which people began to pay attention to Apple again on something other than how badly economically the company was doing". The stock market rendered its verdict on Thursday: at least $9 billion.

Jony Ive, the chief architect of groundbreaking and distinctive designs from the iMac to the iPhone, announced Thursday that he is leaving Apple after almost 30 years.

In the last few years, the company has taken a number of critical hits for its products-from the soft initial launch of the Apple Watch, to the underwhelming reception of the HomePod, and even to this year's MacPro, which has is divisive for its kitchen gadget aesthetic.

'After almost 30 years and countless projects, I am most proud of the lasting work we have done to create a design team, process and culture at Apple that is without peer, ' Ive said.

According to Apple, Ive holds over 5,000 patents. "This just seems like a natural and gentle time to make this change".

In a statement, Apple CEO Tim Cook called Ive "a singular figure in the design world".

In the article Mr Ive said Marc Newson, a friend and collaborator at Apple, would also join the new firm.

Apple shares fell slightly on the announcement. It will be interesting to see how Ive's new design venture works with Apple going forward.

Designers Evans Hankey, vice president of Industrial Design, and Alan Dye, vice president of Human Interface Design, will jointly replace Ive according to the company.

Despite the major step outside Apple's umbrella, Ive told the Financial Times that LoveFrom won't be designing products that are different for the sake of being different but will focus on applying what he learned at Apple in a tangible way. After so many years working closely together, I'm happy that our relationship continues to evolve and I look forward to working with Jony long into the future.

While he would not be drawn on the full extent of LoveFrom's work, Sir Jonathan said that he would continue to work on wearable technology and healthcare, two of Apple's strategic priorities, as well as various "personal passions".

Since then, Ive headed the design team responsible for the iMac, iPod, iPhone, and iPad.
