The next Jaguar XJ will be all-electric

Jaguar Land Rover said that while the expansion of its electrified line-up will see customers offered a greater choice, "increased consumer take-up remains a challenge".

Dr Speth said: "We are co-locating our electric vehicle manufacture, electronic drive units and battery assembly to create a powerhouse of electrification in the Midlands".

Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth said his company was committed to making the "next generation" of zero-emission vehicles in the UK.

Jaguar Land Rover (TAMO.NS) is making a multi-million pound investment to build electric vehicles in Britain, in a major boost for the United Kingdom government and a sector hit by the slump in diesel sales and Brexit uncertainty.

Jaguar Land Rover has confirmed it will make a range of new electric cars in the United Kingdom and has called on the Government to work with industry to build a "giga-scale" battery production plant in Britain.

The all-electric version of the Jaguar XJ sedan will be made at the firm's factory in Castle Bromwich, in central England.

But it has signed a deal with workers at the Castle Bromwich factory to go from a 5-day to a 4-day working week with the same amount of hours which should allow the plant to operate more efficiently.

The new Battery Assembly Centre at Hams Hall will become operational in 2020 and will become "the most innovative and technologically advanced in the United Kingdom with an installed capacity of 150,000 units".

Later this month, work will begin to commence the installation of all-new facilities and technologies required to support Jaguar Land Rover's next-generation Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA). It reflects our determination for the United Kingdom to be at the forefront of the development and manufacturing of the next generation of electric vehicles.

The plant, near the M6 in Birmingham, employs around 2,500 workers.

"We are determined to realise that ambition", he said. The announcement secures the future of the Castle Bromwich plant along with several thousand jobs in the UK.

Both candidates to replace Prime Minister Theresa May, Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt, have both said they are prepared to take Britain out of the European Union on October 31 without a deal, although it is not their preferred option.

Workers union Unite on Friday said the Birmingham investment decision was a "fantastic boost" to the troubled United Kingdom auto industry.

"This is a proud day for our members and Jaguar Land Rover", Unite said.

"However, the fact remains that overall investment in United Kingdom automotive is plummeting and global players are choosing to invest in electrification elsewhere".

The facility, Jaguar said, will be the "most innovative and technologically advanced in the UK".

"We are committed to the United Kingdom as our home and will fight to stay here but we need the right deal".
