Melania Trump 'Smurfette' sculpture unveiled in Slovenian home town to mixed reviews

The life size statue of Melania erected on the outskirts of Sevnica was inaugurated on Friday, according to The Guardian.

The statue was the brainchild of American artist Brad Downey, who commissioned a local "amateur chainsaw sculptor" Ales "Maxi" Zupevc to carve it, according to AFP.

Some people have branded the statue a "scarecrow" due to its simplicity.

However, he also said he found the statue "absolutely beautiful".

There was no attempt at an accurate likeness, to the point where the gallery in Ljubljana was left uncertain about how seriously to take the statue.

A local resident said: "If the monument was meant to be a parody, then the artist has been successful".

After Melania cake, Melania honey, and even Melania slippers, the Slovenian hometown of the USA first lady will now boast a statue of its most famous daughter - albeit one that has faced decidedly mixed reviews.

Locals have even been cashing in on her fame by offering Melania branded food and merchandise as well as offering tours of the local area showing where she grew up.

"We in Sevnica can only laugh and, at the same time, hold our heads in our hands over their (the Trumps') catastrophic reputation", she added.

Katarina, a 66-year-old resident of the nearby town of Rozno, told AFP she thought the statue was a "good idea".

Downey said it's the first monument anywhere dedicated to the first lady and former model.

Some Twitter users were certain the first lady was making a statement of support for the LGBT community, unlike her husband who failed to recognize the observance of Pride month in his first two years as president and has made an effort prohibit transgender people from serving in the military.
