Some 100,000 cases of cancer could be prevented in Britain in the next 40 years by a vaccine against the human papillomavirus (HPV) that causes cancers of the cervix, mouth, anus and genitals, United Kingdom health officials said on Tuesday.

HPV causes 99% of cervical cancers as well as 90% of anal, about 70% of vaginal and vulvar cancers and more than 60% of penile cancers.

'We are pleased that the HPV vaccine will be given to Year 8 boys, as well as girls, from September - this is something the RCGP has long-called for.

"HPV can affect everyone, it does not discriminate, yet there are still several harmful stigmas and myths that surround it". HPV is a group of 150 related viruses that can be transmitted through any form of sexual contact, whether kissing or intercourse.

This will include 3,433 cases of penile cancer and 21,395 cases of head and neck cancer, such as throat cancer, in men.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "almost every person who is sexually active will get HPV at some time in their life if they don't get the HPV vaccine".

"Universal HPV vaccination is the most effective way of preventing HPV-related infection and disease".

PHE said the programme meant infections of some strains of HPV in youngsters aged 16 to 21 have fallen by 86% in England. A Scottish study also showed the vaccine had reduced pre-cancerous cervical disease in women by up to 71%.

Estimates from the University of Warwick suggest the vaccine, which protects against the human papilloma virus (HPV), will prevent 64,138 cervical cancers and 49,649 non-cervical cancers in the United Kingdom by 2058.

An estimated 561,200 new cancer cases worldwide (5.2% of all new cancers) were attributable to HPV in 2002, although in recent years, vaccination campaigns have brought that rate down somewhat.

"This is a life saving vaccine and I would encourage all eligible boys and girls to take up the NHS offer of the free vaccine". "Now, we have the tools for eradicating most of the HPV-related cancers for women and men", said Director of London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine's Vaccine Center, Prof. "It's important not to delay vaccination, as the vaccine may be less effective as adolescents get older", Dr Mary Ramsay of Public Health England, said. Protection lasts for at least 10 years, although probably much longer.

"It pleases us to see the United Kingdom following the example of other nations such as Australia, which have implemented the vaccine for boys in 2013 and for girls since 2007".

Health officials claimed when making the announcement that giving the vaccine to boys this age will prevent 29,000 cancers in United Kingdom men in the next 40 years.

By extending the HPV vaccine to boys, the NHS is taking an important step forward in our fight to prevent cancer - more people will be better protected, and the vaccine could help to eliminate cervical cancer in this country.

The jab protects in opposition to human papillomavirus, which causes many oral, throat, and anal cancers.

The human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine now used in the NHS vaccination programme is called Gardasil.
