"After thoroughly reviewing the play from all angles, I have concluded that Jake's actions warrant discipline", MLB chief baseball officer Joe Torre said in a statement accompanying the announcement. It overshadows what should be a happy time for this Astros team, with its players' strong performance in the All-Star game. Marisnick, who also was fined, appealed the suspension and was available to play. Major League Baseball said the suspension would begin Thursday if he didn't appeal. Through 72 games and 194 plate appearances this season, Marisnick is hitting.250/.309/.466 with eight home runs, 12 doubles, a triple and six steals.

If he didn't appeal, then the suspension would have gone into effect Thursday.

Following the collision, Marisnick said that he didn't intentionally try to injure Lucroy.

Marisnick's Astros teammates on Sunday defended him in the comments and on social media.

"I spoke with him after the incident".

Lucroy was carted off the field last Sunday after the collision at the end of the eighth inning of a game at Houston the Astros won 11-10 in 10 innings. "I hope nothing but the best for [Jonathan Lucroy]". "And it was a bad play and I hope he's OK".

Lucroy's fellow catcher, Yadier Molina of the St. Louis Cardinals, called the play "bull--" in a now deleted Instagram post and demanded a suspension for Marisnick.

"It certainly didn't look like a clean play", said Ausmus. "I don't know what actually happened. The call was right". I told him what I saw. "It's hard in that one to three-foot circle where you're trying to figure out, going in full speed, what's going to happen".
