Nicki Minaj cancels Saudi Arabia concert following backlash

Nicki said in a statement: "After careful reflection I have chose to no longer move forward with my scheduled concert at Jeddah World Fest".

Minaj, known for her raunchy outfits and provocative stage performances, was due to headline the Jeddah World Fest music festival on July 18, but her plan to appear was criticized last week on social media. Organizers have shared some of the names who will be performing at the festival, including Liam Payne and Steve Aoki. "After careful reflection I have made a decision to no longer move forward with my scheduled concert at Jeddah World Fest", Minaj said in a statement Tuesday to The Associated Press. "After careful reflection, I have chose to no longer move forward with my scheduled concert at Jeddah World Fest", Entertainment Weekly quoted Minaj in a statement released.

In Saudi Arabia, gender segregation between single men and women is still enforced in many restaurants, coffee shops, public schools and universities, but other rules have loosened with women now allowed to drive and attend events in sports stadiums.

A report by the Associated Press cited Minaj confirming she chose to cancel her gig after "educating" herself on Saudi Arabia and the human rights violations committed in it.

Meanwhile, the Saudi media had another take on the story.

"Nicki Minaj demonstrates what leadership looks like", said Halvorssen. The human rights organization is fighting a regime in this country that insists on the separation of the sexes and the oppression of women's rights.

The news sparked controversy and massive reactions in Saudi Arabia. "We hope he and his managers choose morals over money".

Following the cancellation, the HRF commended Minaj for her "inspiring and thoughtful decision" while charging other entertainers still subscribed to the show to follow her lead. Saudi women are bound to an extremely conservative dress code.
