Woman 'throws snake at driver then steals vehicle' before crashing in alleged car theft

A SC woman is accused of assaulting a woman with a snake Friday night, stealing her vehicle and driving it through several police barriers in downtown Greenville, police said.

Officers were called to investigate a carjacking report at 8:20 p.m. Friday, according to a Greenville Police Deptartment news release.

The victim told investigators a woman threw sticks and a black snake at her before stealing her Honda CR-V.

She also faces $17,225 in damages.

Police arrested 29-year-old Hilmary Moreno-Berrios at the scene.

The suspect was arrested a short time later after she struck a moving vehicle with a mother and daughter inside who had been attempting to flee.

Down but not out, Moreno-Berrios reportedly pulled herself out from the wreck, abandoning the stolen auto and fled the scene on foot.

She was arrested and charged with carjacking and malicious damage to personal property.

Surveillance footage released by cops captured an out-of-control Moreno-Berrios barreling down the area's Main Street and plowing into event barriers that were set up for a pole-vaulting competition.

"The weird incident garnered widespread community attention not only for the chase through the heavily-populated route the suspect traveled, but also because Moreno-Berrios carjacked the Honda CR-V by throwing sticks and what turned out to be a live, non-venomous black snake at the victim", the statement said.

The black snake used in the alleged carjacking was released into the woods after it was found alive and determined to be non-venomous. Police are still working to figure out a possible motive behind the incident.
