Top official: ICE ready to deport 1 million undocumented immigrants

As Nationwide Raids Loom Things Are About To Get ICE-y For Some Illegal Immigrants

Activist groups say that this general and imminent threat to the undocumented is detrimental to the communities and the U.S. economy, forcing adults to miss work and children to skip school for fear they may be detained and separated.

Cuccinelli said Trump intends to make good on his vow to deport "millions" of illegal immigrants.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is ready to track down and deport immigrants who have final removal orders, according to a recent interview with acting director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Ken Cuccinelli on CBS's "Face the Nation".

Cuccinelli said the details of the deportations, including how many undocumented immigrants are deported will be determined at ICE's discretion.

"They've been all the way through due process and have final removal orders", he said. "The pool of those with final removal orders is enormous", he added.

Trump promised on June 18 that millions of deportations would begin the following week.

Under Obama, ICE deported around 385,000 people annually each fiscal year from 2009-2011 and reached a high of 409,000 in fiscal year 2012.

ICE operations would include "collateral arrests", meaning that undocumented immigrants who are not directly targeted by agents will also be detained.

Any large-scale deportation blitz would also likely spark a massive public outcry and affect not only undocumented immigrants with pending removal orders, but millions of mixed-status families with members who are USA citizens.

Efforts to reform the USA immigration system have failed under both Republican and Democratic administration, and there is now no legislation with sufficient bipartisan support to pass in both chambers of Congress, especially during the timeline Mr. Trump demanded.

Cuccinelli backed up Trump's deportation plan, saying the American people should not be surprised by such removal operations, and the ICE migrant roundups have simply been "held up" by Washington political games.

Last month, acting ICE director Mark Morgan said the agency wants to uphold the values of "humanity, compassion and dignity" and he hoped the mass roundup of migrants in the US illegally would send a "powerful message" of deterrence to Central Americans considering the risky passage north.

ICE did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump's statement.
