Taylor Cole opened with two ideal innings before Félix Peña came on for seven more, allowing only a fifth-inning walk. "It was pretty insane".

The Los Angeles Angels turned tragedy into triumph in their first home game since teammate Tyler Skaggs's July 1 death, pitching a combined no-hitter on a night filled with memories of the 27-year-old pitcher.

Among the many others paid to their fallen teammate was a pregame ceremony in which a framed Skaggs No. 45 jersey was placed behind the pitcher's mound. The game was being played one night before what would have been Skaggs' 28th birthday, the Los Angeles Times reported. They plastered his likeness around Angel Stadium, from "Tyler Skaggs, 1991-2019" signs on the LED ribbon boards to an image of him preparing to throw a pitch on the same spot on the center field wall that once bore a picture of Nick Adenhart, the Angels pitcher who died during the 2009 season.

The team wore red home jerseys with Skaggs' name and number on them in their first game since the All-Star break.

Every member of the Angels' roster donned Skaggs's No. 45, and his mom Debbie threw out the first pitch. The two allowed just one baserunner, a walk by Pena to Omar Narvaez in the fifth inning. "We love him, we miss him, and we're always going to be there for him".

That includes the home clubhouse, where Skaggs' locker will be left untouched for the remainder of the season.

"Tonight is about him", infielder Zack Cozart told reporters.

The baseball season's relentless pace forces the Angels to heal while they play, and they went back to work after a somber All-Star break during which Skaggs was honored at the game in Cleveland. We're around each other all day, every day. You just hurt so much for Tyler's family. It's so sudden and so tragic. Forty-five will always be in my mind.

"I think guys will become emotional again, because it is still very fresh", manager Brad Ausmus said.

A fan memorial outside the front entrance continues to grow.
