On July 9, Justice Aamer Farooq had also called on Chief Justice of Pakistan Asif Saeed Khosa and reportedly apprised the latter of the situation and response of the accountability judge to the controversy.

According to an IHC spokesperson, acting IHC Chief Justice Amir Farooq received judge Malik's letter and then made a decision to request the law ministry to remove him from the post.

She said Malik also admitted there was no evidence against Sharif, a claim the judge denies.

However, Minister for Law Dr Farogh Nasim told reporters that his ministry would not initiate any proceedings against the accountability judge in connection with the leaked videos.

In a press conference held on Saturday, PML-N vice president Maryam Nawaz released a video which featured the Accountability Judge Arshad Malik allegedly confessing that he convicted former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the Al-Aziza reference.

He called the video "a lie [and] fake" and accused the Sharif family of threatening and offering him a bribe in exchange for acquitting the former prime minister.

Malik later issued a statement denying he had been blackmailed to convict Sharif and saying the video had been manipulated. Dubbing the alleged video clip fabricated, the judge demanded legal action against those behind the move.

In his petition, Ishtiaq Mirza argued that being a social worker he was approaching the apex court pro bono because he believed that courts were the custodian and guardian of the fundamental rights of every single individual. Protecting freedom of expression is one of our core values.

"During this meeting Nasir Janjua claimed that it was on his specific and personal recommendation to an influential person in the then PML-N Government that I was appointed Judge, Accountability Court No. II, Islamabad", he wrote, adding that he "was not keen to this position".

While talking to a presser along with PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif and senior leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, she said that three times prime minister was put in jail at the age of 70 by a trial court.

She said the judge had contacted Nasir Butt and told him that he was feeling guilty and having nightmares ever since he announced the verdict that led to Nawaz Sharif's imprisonment.

"The verdict against Nawaz Sharif should be declared void as it has now confirmed that the video was not fake and that the judge was coerced into indicting the former prime minister", Aurangzeb said.
