In a public statement at the time, she said: "These posts are completely inappropriate and contrary to the honour and integrity I see - and expect - from out agents day in and day out".

Pence said to Goldstein that his "faith and courage had inspired the nation". This year, we are on track to apprehend more than one million migrants on our southern border. "It is time for Democrats in Congress to step, do their jobs, and end this crisis", Pence wrote on Twitter.

When reporters toured the facility before Pence, the men screamed that they'd been held there 40 days, some longer.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY was among the Democrats who testified.

Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., said, "There is no excuse for how we are treating children".

Last week a report by the Department of Homeland Security's inspector general found children at some Texas border facilities who faced clothing shortages and lacked hot meals, while some adults were held for a week in a cell so crowded they had to stand.

Pence said the center at McAllen was a "prime example" of why the United States must secure its borders. Pool reporter Josh Dawsey of the Washington Post said the "stench was overwhelming". "This is tough stuff".

Numerous men had not showered for 10 to 20 days because the facility did not previously have showers, according to Banks, who said it now had a trailer shower.

Pence said the rough conditions are why the administration recently requested and Congress approved $4.6 billion in aid for the border, and he accused Democrats of not supporting more funding for additional beds at facilities for migrants.

There were no cots for them to sleep on because there wasn't room, Banks said.

Two of the children said they had walked for two to three months before arriving at the facility.

Pence first toured the cavernous facility built in May to handle overcrowding, where 800 people are living.

Earlier in his tour, Pence visited another detention facility with a series of large white tents where most of the detainees were lying on kindergarten-like mats with thin, tinfoil-like blankets. They all nodded, and some said "sí". "Please, American public", Lesko said, "there is no one asking people to drink out of toilets".

Health and Human Services officials say their youth holding facility in Carrizo Springs, Tex., aims to move children out of border patrol custody swiftly. Several children have died after crossing the border and being taken into federal custody.

Some 384 single men were corralled behind metal fences inside the sweltering facility in McAllen, according to a pool reporter on the scene.
