Bild counted 21 foreign trips that Merkel, who turns 65 next week, has been on so far this year, which it said was more than 41-year-old French President Emmanuel Macron, on 17, and 62-year-old British Prime Minister Theresa May, on 16.

Almost 60 per cent of Germans feel that Chancellor Angela Merkel's bouts of uncontrolled shaking are a personal matter, according to a survey published today. Up to 51 percent said it was her own business, while seven percent said her shaking was nobody's business but her own in research by pollster Civey conducted on Thursday and Friday for the Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper published today.

Most Germans believe Angela Markel " s health is a "private concern', according to a recent poll.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel walks past the honour guard as she receives Finland's new Social Democrat Prime Minister Antti Rinne with military honours at the Chancellery in Berlin, Germany, July 10, 2019.

Although she has suffered three bouts of uncontrolled shaking in public, and remained seated this week as national hymns were played during a ceremony with Denmark's new prime minister, the German chancellor insists she is doing "very well".

Leading the European Union's largest economy, Merkel is renowned for her work ethic and has a reputation for outlasting otherleaders at EU summits with her ability to focus on the details of complex discussions deep into the night. Mrs Merkel is famously private, only rarely making public appearances with her husband.

Ms Merkel has led Germany since 2005, making her the longest-serving political leader of a major Western democracy.

Now serving her fourth term in office, she does not plan to stand again at the next federal election, due in 2021.

Merkel made a decision to seek a fourth term only after long reflection, and said in November 2016 she was seeking to stay on "if health allows".

In the U.S., portions of the results of the president's annual medical examination are traditionally made public, but in Germany, political leaders are generally expected to enjoy more privacy around their health.
