James Rodriguez linked with surprise move to Real Madrid's rivals

According to Marca, Rodriguez, who has spent the past two seasons on loan at Bayern Munich, is attracted to the prospect of joining Atletico as he wants to remain in the Spanish capital.

Madrid are keen to sell the 28-year-old this summer, but are looking to secure a huge figure for his services.

Friday, De Laurentiis again called on Madrid to lessen their demands, suggesting Napoli are ready to meet them part way, if Los Blancos are willing.

James Rodriguez could become an unlikely, but sensational, move for Atletico Madrid as the club close to seal a transfer that will bring him to the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano.

"We are all prepared to make sacrifices for James Rodriguez, but we ask Real Madrid to make them too", De Laurentiis told Sky Sport Italia.

'We have not given up hope on securing a deal, but Madrid must consider that it is better to sell him, or loan him, rather than have him unhappy at the club'. I don't talk to Florentino Perez about James, as we have (director of sport Cristiano) Giuntoli and an agent-friend of James, who is also our friend (Jorge Mendes), so we don't need to talk to Florentino. "Studying this player, I realised he only ever really delivered on two occasions, both with Carlo Ancelotti on the bench, at Real Madrid and Bayern Munich".

"We'll see what happens".
