An natural disaster of magnitude 6.9 struck west of the beach resort of Broome, Australia, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The 6.6 magnitude undersea quake struck at 3.39pm AEST (7.39pm NZT) on Sunday between Port Hedland and Broome, GeoScience Australia reported.

The United States Geological Survey agency said the quake hit at a depth of 33km, about 203km offshore.

There is no threat of a tsunami to the Australian mainland, islands or territories, the weather bureau said.

This comes a day after a 5.5 magnitude quake hit off the coast of Surigao del Sur province in southern Philippines.

Matso's Restaurant, attached to the famous Broome brewery on Hamersley St, was evacuated as the area "shook like crazy".

Videos posted on social media showed cars and buildings shaking and groceries being knocked from shelves, with some residents reporting minor damage to businesses.

"There's been over 1000 felt reports all the way from Darwin to Perth and there have been preliminary reports of some damage".

Derby resident Jody Gaunt was having a beer with friends when they felt the first quake.

Stock at a number of stores was damaged when goods fell to the floor during the tremor.

'The trees stopped moving and the breeze stopped blowing.

"First I thought it was a really strong gust of wind but when we went outside their was not really any wind at all".

"Just had my first quake on Karratha.We felt it in Karratha".

'It felt like being on one of those vibrating machines.

"This is the first time I've experienced anything like's a bit frightening when the ground around you is moving and you can actually feel yourself and everything around you moving with the Earth". The whole house is vibrating, shaking and maybe lasted for 10 seconds. "Never experienced anything like it before - quite incredible".
