According to the US Department of Defense policy, the name of the service member killed in action is being withheld until 24 hours after notification of next of kin is complete.

The Taliban refused to hold direct talks with the Afghan government, calling it a USA puppet, but have said they would talk with government officials if they arrive at the meeting as ordinary Afghans. He said one had been killed, one captured, and two others were still holed up in the hotel.

Afghanistan's police and military personnel come under near-daily attacks and have suffered staggering casualties in recent months, most often at the hands of Taliban insurgents, who say the war will continue as long as USA and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces are still in Afghanistan.

The framework agreement includes a timeline for USA troops withdrawal from Afghanistan, a ceasefire and a Taliban guarantee to not allow foreign forces to use the country as a staging ground for foreign attacks. Some 14,000 American troops are deployed there and engaged in counterterrorism operations against al-Qaida and Islamic State fighters and training and advising Afghan security forces.

Meanwhile, Afghan officials told VOA that a group of heavily armed "suicide bombers" stormed a police base in Qala-e-Naw, the capital of the northwestern Badghis province, killing at least three security personnel and wounding eight others.

Rahimi said two of the attackers were killed in ongoing clashes with security forces.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for a number of attacks during the peace talks, including a July 1 assault in Kabul that claimed dozens of lives.

The violence comes amid intensified USA -led efforts to strike a deal with the Taliban to bring an end to the 18-year-old Afghan war. "The four sides encouraged all parties to take steps to reduce violence leading to a comprehensive and permanent cease-fire that starts with intra-Afghan negotiations", said a joint statement issued after the meeting in Beijing.

"Pakistan appreciated the constructive efforts by the China-Russia-US trilateral consultation on the Afghan peace process", it added.
