Washington Nationals vs. Philadelphia Phillies Prediction, Preview, and Odds - 7-14-2019

The public betting for the contest now has 55 percent going on Philadelphia at home.

The Washington Nationals and Philadelphia Phillies were barely back from the All-Star break when the promise of a potential matchup of former Cy Young Award winners in the finale of the first series of the second half fizzled out. The Nationals won the last meeting 4-3.

The slumping and banged-up Arrieta will look to help the Phillies avoid a sweep Sunday afternoon, when the 2015 National League Cy Young award victor starts against the visiting Nationals. He is 5-6 on the year with a 3.66 ERA.

The Nationals continued surging Saturday night, when Juan Soto hit a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the ninth to lift Washington to a 4-3 win.

Anthony Rendon leads the Nationals with 20 home runs home runs and is slugging.606. The Nationals will give the call to 35-year old right-hander Anibal Sanchez, and the Phillies will have 33-year old right-hander Jake Arrieta take the mound.

Sanchez earned the win in his most recent start July 4, when he allowed two runs (one earned) over six innings as the Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 5-2. The Phillies are 47-45 on the season, 27-19 at home and 46-43 with the under. The Philadelphia pitching staff owns a 4.63 team ERA, positioning them 18th overall. Soto also had a go-ahead solo home run against the Phillies on September 11, 2018.

Washington got a run closer in the eighth when Soto scored on an error by Phillies third baseman Maikel Franco that made it 3-2 Philadelphia.

The Nationals have won seven of their last eight road games and six of their last seven Sunday games.

Philly logged seven hits in the loss Saturday but couldn't score after the fourth inning.

Sanchez has been pretty consistent with his outings. Across 108.0 innings and an 8-7 record, Arrieta has a 4.67 ERA with 85 Ks and 40 BBs. Washington is 7-1 in Sanchez's last eight starts and 7-1 in his last eight on grass. Arrieta is trending in the other direction, allowing 14 earned runs over his last 14.1 innings. Given the run the Nationals are on right now, I am going to stick with the hot team, and the hot pitcher, to get another victory today.
