Philadelphia man, neighborhood mob beats carjacker to death after suspect takes off with 3 kids: Cops

- Philadelphia police say a carjacking suspect has died after he allegedly stole a vehicle with three children inside and was chased down by their parents Thursday night.

At the same time, a 54-year-old man was outside and saw the woman leave the auto with the engine running.

Philadelphia reported that the suspect, Eric Hood, broke into the auto and drove off with the young children inside.

The vehicle soon got stuck in traffic, and authorities say the couple pulled the 54-year-old man out of the vehicle.

Police say other men joined in.

The man, identified as Eric Hood, was knocked unconscious and taken to a hospital, where he died.

When she went inside, the woman reportedly left her vehicle running with her three children - a 7-month-old, a 1-year-old and a 5-year-old - inside.

"Hood managed to break free from the father and fled across 29th Street".

"We are working on finding out who these other men were that also assaulted the individual that subsequently died", said Chief Inspector Scott Small from the Philadelphia Police Department. "At some point Mr. Hood became unresponsive". The suspect then ran about half a block before the father, the mother, and a group of apparent bystanders caught up and started beating him.

The woman was visiting her boyfriend, 25, who worked at the pizzeria and left her Hyundai Sedan running outside.

Hood reportedly had an extensive criminal history that included 24 prior arrests and convictions.
