Widespread power outages hit parts of New York's Manhattan

The city's subway system said it was working with the utility and that the outage was affecting Midtown and the Upper West Side. And the transit officials warned people to "avoid below-ground subway stations".

Images on Twitter showed darkened subway stations and inoperable traffic lights. But that means many more people have no power, as one "customer" can represent a great many more people.

NYPD and FDNY are on scene, the NYPD announced on Twitter. "We're working to identify causes and keep trains moving". The Con Ed power outage map, which showed more than 45,400 customers were without power, indicated the outage stretched from the far west side to Fifth Avenue.

The city's fire department was responding to numerous transformer fires, the first of which occurred in Manhattan on West 64th Street and West End Avenue, officials said.

An early unconfirmed report said there was a transformer fire at 12th Ave. around W. 54th St.

Gainer also hit the road to see how drivers are handling the unsafe traffic conditions on Manhattan's West Side Highway.

"Several stations are now without power and are being bypassed by all trains", it posted on Twitter. It advised people to stay away from underground stations.

Meanwhile, in Midtown west, in a neighborhood known as Hell's Kitchen, a man takes it upon himself to direct traffic. MSNBC is back on the air thanks to a backup generator, but most of 30 Rock is dark.

At Rockefeller Center, traffic lights were out.

A blackout affects buildings in the Manhattan borough of NY, U.S, July 13, 2019.

Ironically, the power outage falls on the same day as the 1977 blackout that lasted 25 hours, after a bolt of lightening struck an electrical substation. Then it was a lightning strike and subsequent transmission failure.

Now, decades later, it appears a blackout has hit Manhattan.

NBC News correspondent and anchor, Kate Snow, tweeted a picture of a dark hallway at the network's headquarters, and said staffers were forced to use backup generators to broadcast Saturday's edition of Nightly News.
