'The Expanse' Season 4: Premiere Date, Teaser Trailer & First Footage Unveiled By Amazon

The fourth season of The Expanse is on its way - and on a new network - later this year, and the move to Amazon Prime Video isn't the only big change coming. At San Diego Comic-Con 2019 on Saturday, Amazon Prime Video announced the release date - December 13 - and unveiled the trailer for the upcoming fourth season of The Expanse, which will be its first on the streaming service after it was cancelled by its original U.S. broadcaster Syfy midway during the third season. Specifically, Friday, Dec. 13. A six-minute clip aired in a packed Indigo Ballroom featured the crew of the frigate Rocinante hard at work on a mission from the United Nations which sends them beyond the Ring Gate to explore new worlds.

The description for the upcoming season reads: "With the Ring Gates now open to thousands of new planets, a blood-soaked gold rush begins, igniting new conflicts between Earth, Mars, and the Belt". Ilus is the first of these planets, one rich with natural resources but also marked by the ruins of a long dead alien civilization. The shows on Amazon Prime speak for themselves: "this is a platform that values complex, layered storytelling, and we're thrilled to be on it - it's the ideal home for The Expanse". (Syfy only had first-run linear rights to air the show Stateside, meaning it didn't cash in on digital/streaming rights.) A little over a week later, Amazon announced it would give the show a home for Season 4. While Earthers, Martians and Belters maneuver to colonize Ilus, the first of these planets, larger dangers await the explorers. Or, for the more literary minded, Corey's "Expanse" book series now encompasses eight novels, more than enough light reading to pass the time.
