First Star of Amazon’s Forthcoming Lord of the Rings Series Announced

Markella Kavenagh has reportedly been cast in Amazon Prime's Lord of the Rings prequel series.

According to Deadline, young Australian actress Markella Kavenagh has landed the first of many highly sought-after roles on the high-profile series.

Juan Antonio (J.A.) Bayona (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, The Orphanage, The Impossible) will direct the first two episodes of Amazon Studios' The Lord of the Rings TV series and also executive produce alongside his producing partner Belén Atienza. Variety reports her character will be named Tyra, though details are not immediately available. She is repped by Silver Lining Entertainment.

The TV show is being developed by JD Payne and Patrick McKay.

Amazon and reps for Kavenagh declined to comment.

Variety exclusively reported in November 2017 that a Lord of the Rings series was in the works at Amazon, with the streamer announcing a multi-season production commitment shortly thereafter.

It'll be set during the Second Age, which is the pre-Fellowship of the Ring era when Sauron's Rings of Power were forged. They lead a writers room, which is believed to include Breaking Bad alumna Gennifer Hutchison and Game of Thrones veteran Bryan Cogman, among others.

The Lord of the Rings series is produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema.
