Most individuals who have symptoms will experience "flu-like" illness, including fever, headache, body aches, swollen glands, and muscle weakness.

"I think it's unusual in the sense that we had West Nile in the surrounding counties for a considerable time before we had a detection in Ada County", he said.

Most endemic arboviral diseases are nationally notifiable and are reported by state health departments to CDC through ArboNET, the national arbovirus surveillance system, using standard surveillance case definitions that include clinical and laboratory criteria.

Schroeder said flooding in 2017 promoted the spread of West Nile.

Stagnant backyard pools can be a big source of mosquitoes and should be maintained regularly to prevent mosquito growth.

Officials said in June that the virus had been found in mosquitoes in the county. The mosquitoes in the samples were of the Culiseta Melanura species, which is primarily bird-biting, as well as the Ochlerotatus canadensis, which is primarily mammal-biting.

Health district officials urge people to take precautions to protect themselves from mosquito bites.

In response to the recent positive tests in Yolo County, the vector control district will continue to monitor all West Nile virus activity through widespread mosquito trapping and testing, as well as ground treatments in areas where positive mosquitoes have been found to quickly decrease populations and protect public health, the vector control district reported Wednesday.

Clothing Can Help Reduce Mosquito Bites.
