A police force which posted a wanted drug dealer's mugshot on Facebook has warned it could take action against abusive comments after his hairstyle was mocked online.

The Gwent Police Department in South Wales had posted to Facebook to appeal for information about 21-year-old Jermaine Taylor from Newport, who violated his parole after being released from prison in December.

But instead of the public helping police locate the wanted man, they instead made fun of his receding hairline which became the butt of jokes and puns from around the world.

Another user, Callum Duff, commented: "His hairline goes back further than my family tree".

One joked about police "combing the area" while another suggested detectives look in Edinburgh, which is homing the fringe festival. "That was one windy paper run".

Gwent Police later said that numerous comments "made us laugh", but stressed, "When the line is crossed from being amusing to abusive, we do have to make sure we are responsible and remind people to be careful about what they write on social media". "If you say something about someone which is grossly offensive or is of an indecent, obscene or menacing character, then you could be investigated by the police".

"However, when the line is crossed from being amusing to abusive, we do have to make sure we are responsible and remind people to be careful about what they write on social media".
