"Any presence of the Zionist regime in the Persian Gulf waters is illegal, as it may result in war and confrontation in the region".

Al-Hakim stressed that Israel's participation in such a mission was unacceptable, AP said.

On Friday, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi warned that the country considers possible Israeli presence in a US-led coalition in the Persian Gulf as a clear threat to its national security, and reserves the right to counter it.

Katz didn't claim Israel had ships in the Persian Gulf.

"By establishing an illegal coalition in the region, the USA and the United Kingdom are trying to implement their own scenarios", he added.

Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps naval commander Alireza Tangsiri warned Sunday that "any illegitimate presence by the Zionists in the waters of the Persian Gulf could spark a war", after Israel announced that it was taking part in a USA -led mission to secure the Strait of Hormuz.

Security of the region can and should be established only by regional countries.

His stark warnings followed reports about Zionist regime agreeing to take part in a US-led global naval coalition in the Persian Gulf, which Washington claims is aimed at securing navigation routes for vessels in the wake of a series of oil tanker incidents there. "We'll ensure the security of the Persian Gulf as long as our own security is ensured".

Washington and its Arab allies in the Gulf region have accused the Islamic republic of carrying out the tanker attacks.

The UK has said it will take part, but other European countries have so far kept out, fearing it might harm efforts to reach a negotiated settlement with Iran.

Tehran and Washington have been at loggerheads since President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew the U.S. from a nuclear accord between Iran and world powers in May 2018, reimposing biting sanctions.
