Heavy to very heavy rain has been forecast for Wayanad district over the next two days

Heavy showers lashed Uttarakhand and Jammu leaving nine people dead in landslides, while rescue and relief operations continued in Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat on August 12 with the death toll climbing to 173 in the four flood-hit states. Malappuram was rocked by a series of landslips triggered by heavy rain since August 8 at Kavalappara and Kottakunnu in which 24 people have died.

Speaking on this customer support initiative, Steffen Knapp, Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, said, "At Volkswagen, customers are at the centre of our operations".

IMD has issued a red alert - rescue and rehabilitation mode - for Central states like Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and east Rajasthan, while "orange alert" has been issued for the southern state. Malappuram district with over 54,000 people has the largest number of people living in makeshift camps.

There is an orange alert in nine districts Tuesday, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's Lok Sabha constituency Wayanad, one of the worst-affected areas. "As many as 1168 number of relief camps are operational as 17 districts and 2,028 villages are affected". Over 6.73 lakh people and 50,000 animals were rescued.

The state on Monday announced an assistance of Rs 5 lakh each to those who have lost their houses completely in the floods and landslides, to take up construction work; Rs 1 lakh to those whose houses were damaged and Rs 5,000 monthly to those staying in rental accommodations till their houses are ready.

In Maharashtra, the toll increased to 43 on Monday and as on Sunday almost 4.48 lakh people were evacuated from flood-hit areas, including 4.04 lakh from Kolhapur and Sangli, officials said, adding that 761 villages in 69 taluks have been affected by floods.

Vijayan will visit Malappuram and Wayanad districts on Tuesday.

Volkswagen India is extending help to its customers affected by floods in the states of Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra. As per IMD, the light to moderate rainfall is likely to continue.

Though no "red alert" has been issued for any of the 14 districts, isolated heavy to very heavy rains are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday under the influence of low pressure over Bay of Bengal in southern Kerala. The flood affected Shoranur-Kozhikode section has been fully restored and up and down lines have been made fit for train operation, Railways said.

At relief camps in districts like Kozhikode, a Muslim-dominated area, authorities and volunteers prepared biryani (a dish made with highly seasoned rice and meat, fish, or vegetables) for inmates and ensured facilities for them to offer prayers.

Setting a fine example of unity, Muslim youths cleaned Hindu temples, which were filled with mud after being inundated, in Kannur and Wayanad which had witnessed torrential rains during the past few days. Only the headline has been changed.
