Norway mosque shooting probed as terror act

A suspected gunman tried to shoot up a mosque in Norway over the weekend in an attempted terrorist attack that officials first caught wind of past year - but failed to act on, a police official admitted Monday.

One suspect is in custody after the shooting Saturday at the Al-Noor Islamic Center in the Oslo suburb of Baerum.

A few hours after the Norwegian mosque attack, police discovered the body of a young woman at what they said was the suspect's address.

Acting chief of the police operation Rune Skjold said that the man appeared to hold "far-right" and "anti-immigrant" views and had expressed sympathy for Vidkun Quisling, the leader of Norway's collaborationist government during the Nazi occupation.

Police also charged the suspect with murder after his 17-year-old stepsister was found dead in a separate location.

The man identified by media as 21-year old Philip Manshaus is formally suspected of murder in the death of his 17-year-old stepsister and of a "terrorist act" at the Al Noor mosque on Saturday, police said in a statement.

Online postings under Manshaus's name, made shortly before the attack, expressed admiration for the massacre of more than 50 people at two New Zealand mosques in March by a suspected white supremacist, who filmed and broadcast the killings live online. He was said to be "from the area" where the mosque attack took place, in the town of Baerum.

Three people were present in the mosque at the time, mosque spokesman Waheed Ahmed said.

Authorities are now treating the attack as a suspected act of terrorism and Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg has condemned Saturday's incident as a "direct attack on Norwegian Muslims".

Footage shows the suspect, Philip Manshaus, entering the courtroom with his lawyer Unni Fries as he calmly sits down and smiles for the cameras.

He was overpowered by an elderly woman, police said, after he injured one person.

Oslo police increased security around Sunday's celebrations, including ordering their patrols to be armed, which is generally not the case.

Shots were fired, but there were no victims.

In a statement on Sunday, Oslo police said "the aggressor refused to give any statement to the police this night, but new questionings will be carried out".

The incident comes almost eight years after Norway's deadliest peacetime attack, when anti-Muslim neo-Nazi Anders Behring Breivik massacred 77 people at a camp.
