A man whose truck was being impounded suddenly grabbed a rifle and opened fire, killing a California Highway Patrol officer and wounding two others before he was killed, authorities said.

The two surviving officers are in critical and serious condition, respectively, Riverside Police Officer Ryan Railsback said.

Debbie Howard, Moye's stepmother, told reporters she texted him when she happened to see numerous squad cars speed past her.

Andre Moye had been with the California Highway Patrol about three years when he pulled over a truck on the 215 Freeway in Riverside on Monday evening.

Video filmed near the scene captures the sound of shots as the suspect can be seen approaching a CHP auto with what appears to be a rifle.

The officer put out a call for help which brought officers from CHP, Riverside Police and the Riverside County Sheriff's Department to the scene, Railsback said. Investigators were still gathering evidence from the scene of the "long and horrific gun battle" Tuesday morning.

Video showed the gunman, apparently clad in black and wielding a military assault-style rifle, trading fire with officers and then retreating to crouch behind the front of his truck for cover, still trading shots.

At least two CHP vehicles had visible gunshot damage in the rear windshields at the scene.

Moye, 34, was able to request backup before being transported to the hospital, where he died.

"That is all going to be part of this lengthy investigation", he said.

Dozens of rounds were fired in the melee, the Los Angeles Times reported. "I told my kids to get down and duck but they couldn't, their seatbelts were on", she said.

He led the family as they crawled to the bottom of a bridge to hide and none were harmed. "Prayers go out to all, including the responding officers injured in the shooting".

The name of the suspect was not immediately released. Snipers were posted on the roof as a precaution. Motorcycle officers then led a procession as the hearse was driven to the county coroner's office.
