Who is Shastri’s competition? A look at the coaching credentials of BCCI’s shortlisted candidates

Former Black Caps coach Mike Hesson is on a shortlist of six to be the next coach of the Indian cricket team.

The Indian cricket team will soon get a new head coach - unless, of course, the incumbent Ravi Shastri is reappointed. Besides Kapil, the CAC comprises Anshuman Gaekwad, the former India opener and coach, and Shantha Rangaswamy, the former India women's team captain.

The Board had received over 2,000 applications for different coaching positions with the Indian team, with the contracts of the current staff having run out after the 2019 World Cup, and an extension being granted only for the ongoing tour of the United States of America and the West Indies.

Debate: Should Ravi Shastri continue as the coach of the India men's cricket team?

He then joined as the Mumbai Indians head coach in 2010 and he is now the fielding coach of the franchise. Ravi Shastri is now on a tour of the West Indies. He was involved with Otago in New Zealand was the former coach of Kenya as well.

Former Kiwi coach Mike Hesson (2012 to 2018), was in charge of Kings XI Punjab this season, before he quit.

Hesson also has the experience of coaching in India, taking over as the head coach of Kings XI Punjab.

"Shastri is the automatic entry into this process like the rest of the support staff".

Former cricketer Tom Moody played eight Test matches for Australia between 1989 and 1992 scoring 456 runs.

He began coaching immediately after his retirement, starting with the India Under-19 team followed by the India "A" which included the likes of Robin Uthappa and Gautam Gambhir. Simmons guided Ireland to historic wins over England in the 2011 World Cup and West Indies and Zimbabwe in the 2015 edition. He then served as the director of cricket with Worcestershire for several years before being named as the coach of the Sri Lankan team in 2005. He coached the West Indies to ICC World T20 glory in 2016, before being appointed head coach of Afghanistan in 2017.

Internationally, he has coached the Afghanistan and Zimbabwe teams.

Among the Indians, Robin served as the fielding coach of the Indian team when it won the inaugural World T20 under Mahendra Singh Dhoni's captaincy in 2007. At the franchise level, he has been on the coaching team of the Barbados Tridents in the Caribbean Premier League.

The former Australian all-rounder played global cricket between 1987 and 1999 in both Tests and ODIs sporadically.

He was the batting coach for Afghanistan national cricket team and later on was appointed as the head coach in 2017.

Although Rajput has experience with the Afghanistan and Zimbabwe team, he doesn't have the experience of coaching a top Test nation.

Under Shastri, India have not won any significant trophy and barring the series win in Australia, the team struggled in Test matches in South Africa and England and was also ousted from the 2019 World Cup when they lost to New Zealand.
