The Grace 1 super tanker suspected of carrying Iranian crude oil to Syria in violation of EU sanctions in the British territory of Gibraltar after it was detained

The British overseas territory seized Iran's Grace 1 supertanker on July 4 with the help of British forces on suspicion it was shipping oil to Syria in violation of European Union sanctions.

Iranian oil tanker Grace-1 was detained on July 4 in Gibraltar on the charges of violating European Union sanctions against Syria.

"The vessel was seized based on false allegations.it has not been freed yet", Eslami said.

Quoting Gibraltar authorities, the semi-official FARS news agency said the ship will be released by Tuesday evening.

Following Iran's move to capture a British oil tanker that had violated the maritime law in the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. and the United Kingdom tried to carry out a plan for restrictions on maritime traffic in the strait, but their ploy ended in failure after it was given the cold shoulder by other countries, Eslami added. A senior Gibraltarian government source said that was not correct, though earlier the territory had said it was seeking the de-escalate the situation.

The news about Grace-1 has given rise to hopes about the imminent release of British vessel Stena Impero which was detained by Iran's revolutionary guards about two weeks after the Iranian oil tanker was seized. Britain considers that action to have been illegal retaliation.

The Gulf tanker crisis has added to worsening hostilities since Washington pulled out of Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with six powers, under which Tehran agreed to curb its nuclear work in return for lifting most worldwide sanctions on Tehran.

The Iranian capture of the Stena Impero drew condemnation from Britain and other European parties to the nuclear deal that have been trying to salvage it by shielding Iran's economy from reimposed and toughened US sanctions. The British Foreign Office are yet to respond to Eslami's comments concerning a potential release of Iran's oil tanker.
