That deal, he said, "essentially shut down an ongoing Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into whether there were more victims and other powerful people who took part in Epstein's sex crimes". Prosecutors said he sexually abused dozens of young girls in his NY and Florida residences between 2002 and 2005, allegations that could have landed him behind bars for 45 years.
Serene Gregg, president of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 3148, which represents the staffers, said in a text message, "I can't confirm if in fact anyone has been placed on leave but this is not atypical when an investigation is initiated".
A French child protection group stepped up pressure on Tuesday for prosecutors to open an investigation into the activities in France of Jeffrey Epstein, the US financier found dead in an apparent suicide while being held on sex-trafficking charges.
The US Justice Department said that Attorney General William Barr had directed the Bureau of Prisons to temporarily assign the warden of the Metropolitan Correctional Center in NY, pending the outcome of an FBI and Office of the Inspector General investigation into Epstein's death.
Epstein was taken off a suicide watch last month for reasons that have not been explained, and was supposed to have been checked on by a guard every 30 minutes.
While the exact manner of Epstein's death has not been officially announced, another person familiar with operations at the jail said the financier was discovered in his cell with a bedsheet around his neck.
Questions emerge after Jeffrey Epstein's death; reaction and analysis from retired Federal Bureau of Investigation criminal profiler James Fitzgerald.
Attorney General William Barr said Monday there were "serious irregularities at this facility that are deeply concerning", and said he was demanding "a thorough investigation".
They are expected to reconstruct the scene, analyse why Epstein took his own life and look at how it happened, the official said.
Two staffers who had been assigned to Epstein's unit have also been placed on administrative leave, the department said.
Sasse also asked Barr to confirm that the Department of Justice does not consider Epstein's non-prosecution agreement binding with respect to any of his alleged co-conspirators. An autopsy was performed Sunday, but New York City Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Barbara Sampson said investigators were awaiting further information.
In the days since Epstein's death while awaiting charges that he sexually abused underage girls, a portrait has begun to emerge of Manhattan's federal detention center as a chronically understaffed facility that possibly made a series of missteps in handling its most high-profile inmate.
"Those who had leverage as potential cooperators in the case now find themselves as the primary targets", said Jacob S. Frenkel, a former federal prosecutor.
