Dole recalling baby spinach over salmonella concerns

Dole Fresh Vegetables is recalling packages of baby spinach, according to the FDA.

According to the recall notice posted on The Food and Drug Administration's website, the recall was issued due to a sample of baby spinach that yielded a positive result for Salmonella in a random test conducted by the Department of Agriculture in MI.

The products being recalled are 6-ounce Dole Baby Spinach bagged packages with a lot code of W20308A (UPC code 0-71430-00964-2) and 10-ounce Dole Baby Spinach clamshell packages with a lot code of W203010 (UPC code 0-71430-00016-8).

Salmonella is an organism that can cause foodborne illness in a person who eats a food item contaminated with it.

Anyone can become sick with a Salmonella infection, but infants, children, seniors and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of serious illness because their immune systems are more fragile, according to the state health agency.

Because the products were expired, officials said they weren't being sold in stores any longer but fear consumers could have the products in their homes.

The lot codes and use-by dates are on the upper-right corners of the bags and the top labels of the clamshells.

Officials say no illnesses have been reported in association with the recall.

Consumers with this product should throw them away. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Customers with questions can call the Dole Customer Center at 1-800-356-3111.
