Avery's family are originally from Cork city but now live in the town of Mallow. Tragically, when he swam closer he realised that it was a small boy.

Paramedics did everything in their power to assist the child and he was rushed to Alicante General Hospital in an unconscious state.

After resuscitation was performed by a member of the public, the paper reports that vital signs were restored.

He was put on life support, surrounded by his devastated family.

The death is being treated as a tragic accident.

It is understood that the boy was staying with his grandparents. Witnesses have praised the "great emergency services" and the Department of Foreign Affairs said it is "aware of the case and is providing consular assistance". However, what has occurred is "every parent's nightmare".

"It is a very tough time for everyone and our thoughts and prayers are with the families at this very tough time".

The boy, believed to be three years old, was yesterday pulled from the pool in an apartment complex in Cabo Roig near Alicante.

After being given CPR at the scene, emergency services were called and the boy was airlifted to hospital by helicopter.
