Norway Mosque Gunman Not Cooperating With Investigators

Suspected gunman Philip Manshaus appears in court

A few hours after the Norwegian mosque attack, police discovered the body of a young woman at what they said was the suspect's address.

OSLO-The man suspected of shooting at people inside a Norwegian mosque on August 10, and of killing his Chinese-born stepsister, appeared in court on August 12 with black eyes and wounds on his face and neck.

Three worshippers were present in the mosque.

Mohammad Rafiq (R), one of the members of the congregation who stopped the attacker at a mosque, listens as people speak to media next to the Thon Oslofjord hotel in Sandvika, Norway, Aug. 11, 2019.

The court ordered him held in pre-trial detention for four weeks, two of which will be in solitary confinement.

Security experts believe Philip Manshaus is the latest example of an extremist who was radicalized by far-right conspiracy theories spread online, particularly the "great replacement" theory, which falsely warns of a "genocide" in which white people are being replaced by immigrants and Muslims.

Witnesses said Manshaus entered the al-Noor Islamic Centre with several guns, but was overpowered by a 65-year-old member of the mosque, who managed to wrestle away his weapons in the fight that followed.

But police are considering adding a charge of "attempted act of terror".

Sjoevold told a news conference that the agency and the police receive many tips from anxious people every day and the information "didn't go in the direction of an imminent terror planning".

Police said the suspect refused to answer questions and investigators plan to interview neighbors for information about his stepsister and her death.

His eye red and one hand swollen, Rafiq, who has lived in Norway for the past two and a half years, said he was still recovering from the attack.

Hagen declined to comment on any possible motive for the killing. In a closed-door hearing, he did not admit guilt and asked to be set free, his lawyer, Unni Fries, told The Associated Press.

Head of Norway's security police (PST) Hans Sverre Sjovold speaks at a news conference in Oslo, Norway, on August 12, 2019.

Sjovold said, however, that tips received by the intelligence services were unclear and unrelated to the planning of the attack.

She said though it appears to have only been conducted by one person, his beliefs are harbored by others in the country.

"We are trying to combat this, but it's a challenge".

On Sunday, Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg called the shooting a "direct attack on Norwegian Muslims".

In 2011, Anders Behring Breivik massacred 77 people in Norway's worst peacetime atrocity, the majority of them teenagers at a youth camp.

The man charged with opening fire in a Norwegian mosque in the suburbs of Oslo on Saturday and earlier murdering his stepsister, filmed his actions with a GoPro camera, local media reported, citing police.
