Fourth seed Simona Halep suffered a shock second-round loss to world number 116 Taylor Townsend at the US Open.

The No. 4-seeded Romanian fell to American Taylor Townsend, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4), in an upset at the 2019 tournament in Queens on Thursday.

Out on Arthur Ashe Stadium - the biggest court in tennis - Townsend once again got off to a slow start against Halep, who has scored comfortable straight-sets wins against the American in all three of their previous meetings.

The former girls number one demonstrated outstanding reflexes at the net and took the contest to Halep as she set up a decider. "I don't think I can really say what was going in my head because it's TV".

The victory was Townsend's first-ever over a top ten player and the first time an American has knocked off the reigning Wimbledon champion at the U.S. Open since Serena Williams did it in 2008.

Two-time Wimbledon victor Petra Kvitova was another surprise second-round casualty, the sixth seed losing 6-4 6-4 to Andrea Petkovic.

"I had my chances, but I was always missing the last things".

Fending off two break points in the second game of the match, Simona found the zone on both serve and return, rattling off 21 of the last 26 points for a 6-2 after breaks in games five and seven, closing the set with a service victor after 31 minutes.

"But, yeah, overall I don't think I really played that bad".

Halep tried to regain her momentum with three break points in the third set, but Townsend saved all three and held for a 4-2 lead.

"This match gives me so much confidence that I can do it".

"I also had that comfort of knowing I have played Magda before".
