Edmonton-bound Swoop flight forced to make emergency landing after striking bird

According to the Abbotsford Airport's website, the flight was delayed until 8 p.m. PT.

"All travellers were offloaded safely and without incident", the airline said.

"The aircraft involved in the bird strike has been inspected and is undergoing repairs".

"We are working on reaccommodation options for the 176 impacted travellers and will provide updates as available", the statement reads. "Safety is our number one priority and will always be at the forefront of our decision making".

"There was a bird strike at YXX", Alex Mitchell with the City of Abbotsford confirmed on Tuesday.

Flight W0312 showed as "delayed" on Swoop's website.

Officials at Abbotsford Airport, about 55 kilometres east of Vancouver, reported that an aircraft struck a bird after taking off. Some suggested they'd seen smoke or fire.

"We hit bumps - it felt like speed bumps", Bruce Mason said.

"I started yelling, 'Fire in the right engine, fire in the right engine!' The flight attendant came running and she's like, 'What's going on?' And I said, 'There's a fire in the right engine'".

She said they smelled smoke in the cabin, and were told the 737 was turning around because it was down to one engine.

One woman posted to Facebook that the plane engine "sucked up some geese".

The plane landed safely in Abbotsford.
