The initial 110 model will be available with five, six or seven seats, while the 90 will have up to six seats. It is three times stiffer than traditional body-on-frame designs, providing flawless foundations for the fully independent air or coil-sprung suspension and supports the latest electrified powertrains. More impressive, and of particular interest to those overlanders who like to sleep on their car's roof, the Defender has a maximum roof load of 370 pounds.

Welcome to the all-new Land Rover Defender, first previewed as a concept auto at the Frankfurt motor show eight years ago and now as a production-ready article at the same German vehicle event this week. There's also the short-wheelbase three-door 90 variant that will be available by the end of this year, while there is also a larger 130 variant scheduled for a debut sometime next year with an even larger eight-seater option. The side profile is possibly the one that recalls the earlier auto the most. The model range comprises Defender, First Edition and top of the range Defender X models, as well as standard, S, SE, HSE specification packs.

The new Defender sits on all-new D7X platform, not shared with any other Land Rover. It is three times stiffer than the body-on-frame chassis, says the company. The SUV gets a fully independent air or coil sprung suspension and is supported by an array of electronic systems. Land Rover says that Wade Sensing will remap the throttle response, set the HVAC system to "recirculate cabin air", and "locks the driveline and adjusts the ride height to its off-road setting". This new architecture gives the Defender a ground clearance of 291mm and approach, departure and break over angles of 38, 28 and 40 degrees respectively for the 110 version. There's also 900mm of wading depth on offer through the new wade program in the Terrain Response 2 system.

The Defender carries over this balance of ruggedness and modernity on the inside as well. As a result, the Defender 110 offers five, six or 5+2 seating configurations, with a loadspace behind the second-row seats of up to 1075 l, and as much as 2380 l when the second row is folded.

Engine options are familiar. The P300 is powered by 2.0-litre four-cylinder with 300PS and 400Nm while the P400 uses a 3.0-litre inline-six paired with a supercharger and 48V mild-hybrid tech.

Pricing starts at £45,240 (approximately $55,930) for the entry-level Defender model equipped with the D200 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine that makes 200 PS (197 hp). The outputs for this is 404PS and 550Nm. "Its unique personality is accentuated by its distinctive silhouette and optimum proportions, which make it both highly desirable and seriously capable - a visually compelling 4x4 that wears its design and engineering integrity with uncompromised commitment".

In addition to the Accessory Packs, new Defender is available with the widest choice of individual accessories ever assembled for a new Land Rover, with everything from a Remote Control Electric Winch, Rooftop Tent and Inflatable Waterproof Awnings to more conventional tow bar systems and roof racks.
