Rare full Harvest micromoon is coming for Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th - on Friday, September 13 - will have a little extra mischief when a rare full Harvest Moon will be viewable to some in the USA, according to the Farmers' Almanac.

So why is this timing so special?

It is actually quite rare for the whole of the United States to experience a full moon on the date of Friday 13. Those in the central, mountain or pacific time zones will be able to see the full moon before midnight on September 13.

Adding to the rarity, this upcoming full moon almost coincides with apogee, the point in the moon's orbit which places it at its greatest distance from Earth at 252,100 miles away.

The moon should appear full from September 12 until September 15, although NASA says it won't be completely full until 9:30 pm.

The Harvest Moon is said to symbolize when farmers would need to start gathering in food to prepare for the lean winter months.

Normally, the moon rises around 50 minutes later each day on average.

The name "harvest moon" is an old European term applied to a full moon that rises closest to the beginning of fall, NASA says.

"But if you live elsewhere in the country-in the Central, Mountain, or Pacific time zones-the moment that the Moon turns full comes before midnight on Friday, the 13th". This means it will appear about 14 percent smaller, giving it the "Micro Moon" label.

The opposite of a micromoon is a "supermoon" when the the moon is at perigee, or at the closest point to the Earth in its orbit.

When viewed from Los Angeles, the Full Moon will peak around 9.32pm PDT.
