Elizabeth Warren energizes New Hampshire Dems, as Bernie Sanders looks on

New Poll: Sanders, Warren Surging While Biden, Harris Slip

New Poll: Sanders, Warren Surging While Biden, Harris Slip

Every top Democratic presidential contender is touting a detailed overhaul of the criminal justice system to end rules and practices that have been blamed for the mass incarceration of a generation of African Americans.

Supporters of Elizabeth Warren wave signs for her as she appeared on stage at the convention on Saturday.

An Economist/YouGov weekly tracking poll from September 4 showed Biden leading Warren by just 4 percentage points. Pete Buttigieg, the South Bend, Indiana, mayor who's also trying to maintain early momentum, is positioning himself as the face of generational change. The former vice president had 600 delegates, compared to Warren's 545.

What's more, those saying they have a negative impression has gone down from 17% to 11%.

"Elizabeth Warren seems to be on the verge of starting to make significant and serious inroads into this contest", said Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, which conducts the poll. "She had the biggest launch event and the biggest debate moment".

Sanders has heavily focused on the Granite State during this election cycle and has consistently polled strongly with voters as he has kept his sights on Democratic nominee frontrunner, former Vice President Joe Biden. "The trick to this is, neither has Joe Biden". His true opponent, at this point, is Warren, not Biden.

"Unless the calendar changes, she still has a legitimate chance", Sellers said, suggesting that Biden's hold on the lead was fragile. Voters are similarly split on Warren, who gets a 41% favorable and 42% unfavorable rating. Bernie Sanders rounded out the top three candidates with an estimated 286 delegates. The Vermont senator told The Associated Press that his chief priority is significantly reducing the country's prison population, using a combination of remedies that include a $25 billion investment in combating homelessness and local-level law enforcement reforms that he hopes will create stronger ties and fewer misunderstandings between law officers and the communities that they serve. But it's a different story with the broader electorate - 55% of voters say they have an unfavorable impression of Sanders, while just 38% have a positive one.

Warren was notably one of the more progressive lawmakers to endorse Clinton's primary candidacy against Sen.

Seven months after Kamala Harris burst into the race for the Democratic presidential nomination with a flag-draped launch rally and the confidence of a front-runner, the California senator is facing persistent questions about whether she can recapture the energy of her campaign's opening days. That's down to just a quarter of Democrats now. Further complicating that process is the fact that Harris' sister - campaign chairwoman Maya Harris - is frequently on the road with the candidate, putting distance between her and other advisers.

She has, at times, described herself as a "joyful warrior", and argues that she is uniquely qualified to "prosecute the case" against President Donald Trump, telling voters that "dude gotta go".

"We weren't rude for you", she said. We Democrats need to wake up, stop palavering and do what it takes. That's a slight improvement from July when it was the mirror opposite.

President Trump doesn't fair much better than his potential Democratic opponents. "I see a great deal of enthusiasm on the ground, and it is going to be a function of working hard and earning the vote of everyone, and that is what I intend to do".

What's more, while the economy is buoying him - 51% overall and 53% of independents rate it as excellent or good - he's seen something of a bad economic summer.
