A significant number of people contemplating suicide experience anxiety, depression, hopelessness and may feel that there is no other option. In the WHO's Americas region, for example, rates rose by 6 percent in between 2010 and 2016. "Every one of us has a role to play, whether you're a friend, parent, community member or school employee".

Of the 88, the majority of the cases came from the Western Division which confirmed 39 deaths from suicide.

"Suicide is intertwined with so many other major issues - mental health, drug abuse and addiction, the availability of firearms - and it is a tragic reality that impacts families of every kind", Rodriguez said.

According to the World Health Organization, while the majority of suicides happen in low and middle-income countries at 79%, the rate of suicide is actually highest in high-income countries that experience, on average, 11.5 suicides per 100 000 people.

"We want to let people know they are not alone and there are places to go in this community for support", said Kim Willis, communication director for the local Canadian Mental Health Association.

"Despite progress, one person still dies every 40 seconds from suicide", said WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

All ages, sexes and regions of the world are affected (and) each loss is one too many, ' the WHO's report said. "In Sri Lanka, for instance, bans are thought to have led to 93,000 fewer suicide deaths between 1995 and 2015". In a report released on the eve of World Suicide Prevention Day held yesterday, WHO calls on countries to identify pesticides commonly used by people for fatal poisoning and those with high hazardous effects for withdrawal.
