Parliament will vote Monday evening on whether to hold a general election, before being suspended for five weeks into mid-October.

"Boris Johnson has already conceded that the Brexit crisis can only be solved by the British people".

Fran Heathcote, president of the PCS union, said: 'We will call on the TUC to organise a demonstration to demand a general election if one isn't forthcoming.

"It will put us at the mercy of Trump and the big United States corporations itching to get their teeth further into our NHS, sound the death knell for our steel industry, and permanently drive down rights and protections for workers".

'We want an election as soon as possible and we will oppose a national unity government, the main goal of which would be to prevent a Corbyn- led government.' Dave Ward, general secretary of the CWU, which represents post office workers, said: 'I want us trade unionists to be in towns and cities, where Boris Johnson is going to try to create his new army over one issue - Brexit.

"It's Labour's historic mission to transform people's lives, and that transformation begins in the workplace".

"Rights only mean anything if they're enforced".

Answering his critics as he spoke, who insisted that he should no longer sit among other left-wingers because of his criticism of Jeremy Corbyn, Austin shot back: "I left the labour party to shine a spotlight on the disgrace it has become under his leadership, and because I regard myself as proper, decent traditional labour, not like the extremists who have taken over this party and are dragging it in the mud".

Mr Corbyn told the TUC he refused to agree to give voters a say because he did not want to allow Mr Johnson to "dictate" the terms. I think Jeremy Corbyn and the people around him have turned what was a mainstream political party into something very different. "And in that election we will commit to a public vote with a credible option to leave and the option to remain".

"No one can trust the word of a Prime Minister who is threatening to break the law to force through no deal".

He said: "In my constituency, in the most Labour wards, it was the most Brexit".

Watson's intervention is likely to be viewed as less than helpful by the Labour leadership. He often misses shadow cabinet these days. Watson, Thornberry and Starmer will be devastated, because they fear it will see large number of remain supporting Labour voters switching to support the Lib Dems and the Greens in the looming election.

But, while Labour-affiliated unions would rather stay in the EU than have no deal, they believe a Labour government should offer voters a choice in a referendum between a negotiated deal and Remain. "Once we get out of here, there isn't any way to establishment-up Jeremy", one Labour source said.

McDonnell suggested on Sunday the party would not seek to open lengthy negotiations with Brussels, but would be hoping to rubber-stamp something like Theresa May's deal, with the addition of the compromises Labour had secured during the cross-party talks earlier this year.

In his keynote speech at the annual trade union conference, the Labour leader is set to argue that the Tories would "hijack" the 2016 referendum result and use no deal to "shift even more power and wealth to those at the top".
