UK Parliament of Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow after he announced that he will stand down as Commons Speaker at the end of next month.

Mr. Bercow, 56, is best known for presiding over debates, bellowing "Order! Order!" at unruly lawmakers and humorously chastising MPs who irk him. Last week, lawmakers defeated Johnson to pass a law ordering Johnson to seek a delay from the October 31 Brexit deadline.

In the speech announcing his plan to resign, Bercow fixed his gaze on the benches where ministers sit and delivered a direct warning to the government: "We degrade this parliament at our peril".

His announcement was greeted with applause from all sides of the legislature, and a standing ovation from opposition benches. "You've reached out to people across the whole country", he told the Commons.

While she said it was "not funny" and that she had protested when she first heard it, Neill stopped her from speaking further and later tweeted that he had been "appalled" that she should say such a thing live on TV.

"Since the Brexit circus, with all its epic glory, rolled into town, Bercow has become something of an worldwide celebrity", he said. "The Speaker hasn't just bent the rules, he has broken them". If, as expected, lawmakers reject the government's attempt to call an election, he said he would quit on October 31 - the day Britain is now due to leave the EU.

Bercow's retirement will take effect either on Monday night if the current session of Parliament is ended without a successful vote to hold a snap general election, or, in the case of a snap election, on October 31, after the debates surrounding the new Parliament's legislative agenda.

John Hill of Coral said: "John Bercow will be looking for a new challenge once he departs his role as the Speaker of the House of Commons and our betting suggests that could come in the jungle on I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here".

Mr Bercow said he wanted the election for the next speaker to happen "when all members have some knowledge of the candidates". "If you're not interested, leave the chamber".

During his ten-year term, he has survived an outcry over expense claims - including costly use of official cars and overseas trips - and has faced allegations of bullying from former members of staff, which he has denied.
