The distinctive feature of the Land Rover Defender is the styling.

2020 Land Rover Defender makes a debut at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, three years after its withdrawal from the market. The exterior carries the same rugged looks as that of the iconic model.

A large amount of information about the reinvented off-road wagon was drip-fed and ultimately leaked ahead of its unveiling, but Defender's official unveiling still managed to be a momentous occasion for Land Rover enthusiasts the world over, who can now pore over the details of what the British manufacturer describes as "an icon reimagined for the 21st century".

A new vehicle has remained with the usual off-road capabilities and distinctive design features.

In the initial stage, the all-new Land Rover Defender will only be offered in a 5-door version (Defender 110) initially. The rear is nearly completely flat and has geometric inset LED tail lamps on either side of the side-hinged doors. There's also the short-wheelbase three-door 90 variant that will be available by the end of this year, while there is also a larger 130 variant scheduled for a debut sometime next year with an even larger eight-seater option. This stiff aluminum structure can accommodate electrified powertrains. It also comes with a tow assist that makes it a snap back up with a trailer using a control knob in the center console. The Configurable Terrain Response system uses electronic aids to enable off-road driving. This makes it the ideal vehicle for Land Rover enthusiasts who feel the company may have strayed too far from signature design aesthetic. Other features include 291mm road clearance, a 38-degree approach, and 40-degree departure angle, a wading depth of 900mm, a maximum payload of 900kg, a roof load capacity of 300kg, and towing capability of 3500kg. Unique is the optional middle seat in the first row.

Engine options are familiar. Cheaper versions will pack 237 horsepower and 197 horsepower diesel motors, and at least one of those models should come to the US. There are two different engine set-ups for the 2020 model, according to CNET-a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine that outputs 296 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque and a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder mild hybrid that churns out 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque.

The diesels are a bit slower, needing 9.1s (D240) or 10.3s (D200) to reach 100km/h and topping out at 188km/h or 175km/h respectively, but their environmental performance is better with both at 7.6L/100km and 199g/km.

The auto will follow a phased roll-out with the larger Defender 110 expected to launch in the first half of the year, followed by the smaller Defender 90 later in the year.
