Porsche has whipped the wraps off the new "entry-level" all-wheel-drive derivatives of the 992-generation 911 Carrera, expanding its current line-up with the 911 Carrera 4 in coupé and cabriolet guise.

The 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet is a tad slower as the dash to 60 miles per hour (96 km/h) takes 4.0 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package and 4.2 seconds without it. Both times represent an improvement of 0.1 seconds compared to the previous 911 Carrera 4 Coupe with PDK. Fitted with the standard 8-speed PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplung) transmission, the 2020 911 Carrera 4 accelerates from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.0 seconds.

The 992-generation Porsche 911 represents a major update over the previous 991-generation auto, and included among the updates is a new front axle for the all-wheel-drive models. The clutch and differential unit is now water-cooled and has reinforced clutches to increase durability and load capacity. For even more traction, an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential can be added.

The new 911 Carrera 4 and 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet are equipped with PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management). The driver can choose between Normal and Sport modes depending on how stiff they want the ride. The Carrera 4 Cabriolet is slightly off the pace, requiring 4.0 seconds to achieve the same feat. Larger wheels with a staggered 20/21-inch diameter (standard on 911 Carrera 4S models) are optionally available. They are grabbed by four-piston calipers with a black finish. Like on the other 2020 911 variants, Wet Mode is included as standard equipment.

Putting that aside, both the coupe and convertible feature 19- and 20-inch wheels that are backed up by perforated and ventilated discs which measure 13 inches (330 mm) front and rear.

On the outside, the only visual differentiation from the 911 Carrera 4S are the exhaust openings, with one rectangular tailpipe on either side of the rear fascia instead of the 4S's twin pipes. Another performance option is the Porsche Torque Vectoring system that's standard on the Carrera S and 4S models. Of course, you can always reply on that to tell the difference as both the Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S can be equipped with an optional sports exhaust system that features two oval tailpipes.

The interior sticks with the 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera S blueprint, with redesigned seats and new Porsche Communication Management system with a 10.9-inch touchscreen and improved connectivity, plus five buttons on the control panel that re-create the look of classic toggle switches.

Pricing for the Carrera 4 starts at a relatively palatable $105,050 and if you opt to ditch the roof, that jumps up to $118,850, including destination.

The 2020 911 Carrera 4 and 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet are available to order now and are expected to reach USA dealers in early 2020.
