Two British-Australian women and an Australian man have been detained in Iran, it has been reported.

One British-Australian woman has been behind bars for nearly a year.

The federal government has confirmed three Australians are being held in Iran.

They are understood be in Tehran's Evin jail, where Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe, 41, a mother of one from London, has been held on spying charges since 2016.

A female Australian-British blogger and her male Australian boyfriend were arrested while travelling through Iran 10 weeks ago.

The Times reports one of the women is an academic who studied at Cambridge University and was a lecturer in Australia.

While the charges against her also remain unclear, 10-year terms are routinely given in Iran for spying charges, the Times reported.

"All Australian citizens and holders of dual nationality with Australia who are travelling to or through Iran are urged to follow the travel advice on the DFAT Smartraveller website".

"Due to our privacy obligations, we will not comment further", a spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade told AAP on Wednesday.

It warns "there is a risk that foreigners, including Australians, could be arbitrarily detained, or arrested".

Located in northern part of capital, Evin prison is notable for keeping political prisoners, dissidents and Iranians with dual nationality accused of plotting against the government.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison in August announced a "modest" contribution to the controversial mission - including a frigate, a P8 maritime surveillance aircraft and support staff - which will also involve British forces. It is believed the woman has been sentenced to 10 years in jail, though her alleged offence is not yet known.

Anousheh Ashouri was detained over allegations he was working for the Mossad intelligence agency.

The arrests come amid a downturn in relations between Britain and Iran, sparked by issues including the seizure by the Royal Marines in July of an Iranian oil tanker near Gibraltar.
