Typical... injured Kompany to miss his own testimonial

Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany will miss his own testimonial match on Wednesday night due to a hamstring injury.

"To establish a permanent, physical connection with a place that will forever mean so much to me is truly humbling and I will always be grateful to [owner] Sheikh Mansour, [chairman] Khaldoon Al Mubarak and all those associated with City for their unwavering support and kindness".

Kompany said: "Unfortunately I can't start or even play".

"It's typical of me, I've got a slight hamstring injury so I couldn't risk it tonight but there's a lot of awesome players". It's for an unbelievable cause.

The former City captain is to be honoured by the club he left at the end of last season, after guiding them to the sixth top-flight title of City's history. You need big players in the bigger games but the key strength of this Manchester City team is relying more on the system than the individuals.

"If you go back through the past two years in which the team won five of six available domestic trophies, we had to deal with long spells without Fernandinho, Kevin de Bruyne, myself and Sergio Aguero".

Top 10 most expensive squads in world football revealed as Manchester

Kompany joked: "Mario should be coming but as you know with Mario everything could still go wrong".

The Belgian defender will lead a Manchester City Legends side against a team of Premier League All Stars at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola and Roberto Martinez will take to the dug-out for the fixture, with a couple of star-studded squads at their disposal.

Lining up for the Premier League All Stars XI, fans will see a heavy Manchester United contingent with the likes of Edwin van der Sar, Gary Neville, John O'Shea, Wes Brown - Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs all on show.

The money raised from the friendly will go towards Tackle4MCR, a charity Kompany set up with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to help with homelessness in the city.
